Moraine Lake Lodge
Experience this Once In a Lifetime
Romantic Travel Destination!!!
Moraine Lake Lodge is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. It's a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada.
Elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m).
The view of the mountains behind the lake in Valley of the Ten Peaks is known as the Twenty Dollar View. Moraine Lake was featured on the reverse side of the 1969 and 1979 issues of the Canadian Twenty dollar bill. Some very famous scenery!!!!
Located 15 minutes from the Village of Lake Louise, the 33 rooms at Moraine Lake Lodge offer a true romantic mountain getaway.
Nightly... the lodge offers naturalist presentations in the library. These presentations help educate our guests on the unique history and wildlife in Banff National Park.
Moraine Lake Lodge generates their own power and filter and treat their own glacier fed water. The lodge is not a large hotel that offers a pool, hot tub, laundry services or workout facility. This is not part of their surroundings or vision. They do their best to preserve the simple wonders of our environment. I so totally agree....
In keeping with their mountain get-away experience, no telephones or televisions in any of our rooms. For our guests who must keep in contact with the outside world, there is a guest phone and internet access in the lobby area.
Like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake is visited by thousands of guests, but by sundown the area is exclusive to our 70 guests per night! It's a very exclusive place to stay. In 2010 Moraine Lake Lodge opened for its 98th summer season on June 1st.
Because Moraine Lake is only open from June to early October....it's best to book early so you're not disappointed!!!!
Guests from all over the world visit to canoe on Moraine Lake. Other outdoor activities in the area include hiking, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing, mountaineering and bird watching, all in a secluded wilderness setting.
Moraine Lake Lodge is where the air breathes clearer than perhaps any other place on earth. Every glance reveals a new wonder....come see for your self....
History of Moraine Lake Lodge
Walter Wilcox was hired by explorer Tom Wilson to help map the area around Lake Louise. Wilcox set out in August 1899. For two days he endured rain and snow. On the third day the sky cleared.
Invigorated by the sun, Wilcox hiked up the valley to the top of a pile of rocks. There he discovered a splendid sight - "a narrow, secluded valley with a small lake enclosed by wild rugged precipices... one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen."
Wilcox named it Moraine Lake after the moraine, or rock pile, deposited by the Wenkchemna Glacier. He was later to write that, "no scene had ever given me an equal impression of inspiring solitude and rugged grandeur", adding that his time spent contemplating the view was the happiest half-hour of his life.
Redevelopment of Moraine Lake Lodge began in 1988. Arthur Erickson, one of the world's most famous architects, was commissioned to design a new lodge and cabins. His challenge was to build a facility that would blend with the environment. It had to accommodate overnight guests and approximately 4,000 visitors per day!!!
The Arthur Erickson designed lodge is a post-and-beam log structure. It's graced with grand windows providing breathtaking vistas of the snow-capped mountains and glacier-fed lake. He ensured that no view went to waste.
The result is magnificent. Day users and overnight guests have distinct areas for their enjoyment. The library for instance, serves as a common room where overnight guests can relax after a hike. They can meet other travelers and read quietly by the fire.
At Moraine Lake Lodge, people are inspired to enjoy each other as much as the natural beauty surrounding them. What a great way to spend a romantic weekend romantic weekend, pop the question (propose), enjoy a relaxing honeymoon....you choose!!!
Dining ranges from high-country elegant to Rocky Mountain casual.Steps from their rooms, guests staying at Moraine Lake Lodge are treated to the stunning beauty and incredible turquoise-coloured Moraine Lake. The Valley of the Ten Peaks is a sight visitors from all over the world come to see..

The area around the lake has several walking/hiking trails. The easiest of the hiking trails is the one most commonly taken by tourists.
The Rockpile Trail along the actual moraine is approximately 300 metres long, with an elevation change of 24 metres (79 ft). The view of the lake from the top of the rockpile is one of the most photographed locations in all of Canada.
Along the same trailhead, the Consolation Lakes trail starts, which is approximately 3 kilometers (2 mi) long, with an elevation change of 90 meters (295 ft).
Upon reaching Consolation Lakes hikers may continue along to the upper lake, which is not visible from the end of the lower lake. There is, however, no clearly marked trail, and can often be a scramble over large rocky areas.
Near the canoe docks of Moraine Lake Lodge there is another trailhead. This trailhead is the start of two trails, one of which branches out into four different trails - so there are in total, five trails starting at that trailhead (Moraine Lake Lakeshore Trail, Eiffel Lake, Wenkchemna Pass, Larch Valley, and Sentinel Pass). The Lake Louise & Yoho Map provides information on these trails.
Your days can be filled with endless hikes and sights or the tranquility of doing absolutely nothing at all.
And waiting at the end of any kind of Moraine adventure is awarm and welcoming place to put your feet up, be it our firesidelibrary, or your own comfort-steeped guestroom or cabin.
