Hiking Johnston Canyon Banff
See the Waterfalls - Be Amazed!!!
Johnston Canyon Banff Hike is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Banff National Park.
I've done this scenic walk in the summer during a heat wave. I've trekked up there in February.
It's a must to see for the novice and experienced hiker alike.
It's about a 25 km drive from Banff. West on the Trans Canada Hwy to the Bow Valley Parkway turnoff. Then 18 km to the Johnson Canyon Lodge.
This is where you start your adventure. The lodge is a lovely spot to stop after your short expedition. Sit on the outside deck and admire your surroundings.
Have a latte or a glass of wine. It's cool and shady there after climbing your mini Everest!!!
So what's great about this trip to Johnston Canyon Banff??? There's many options to plan your day. You can start with the lower falls.
It's 1.1 km on a paved walkway. Once there, the water plunges 33 feet into a cavern below. Beautiful to see.
Now you're this far....how is everyone doing? Kids Okay?
The trail becomes slightly more rugged as your continue up to the Upper Falls.
Its another 2.7 km. You'll come upon a beautiful water fall cascading down almost 100 feet.
Actually you can hear the water roaring before you even get there. Amazing to see.
You can feel the spray of the water on your skin...quite refreshing!!!
If you've got curly hair, be prepared, or wear a funky hat!!!
Decision time again. How's everyone feeling? What's the weather doing? You can continue up to the Ink Pots which is more demanding again. If you take your time, slow your pace....you will enjoy!!!
While trekking the Johnston Canyon Hike you will discover the Ink Pots. Very cool little pools that bubble almost iridescently all year round. Colorful and interesting to see.
Nice to enjoy a relaxing picnic and a cool drink up there. Remember to bring your own water and/or lunch.
Usually you can purchase a snack at the Johnston Canyon Lodge before you start out. They're open during the summer months.
Wear comfortable clothing, runners or day hiking boots. You may want to layer your clothing as it's shaded and could be very humid....
A winter trek up the Johnston Canyon Banff can be very icy!!!!
If conditions are good you will probably only be able to reach the Upper Falls depending on how much snow has fallen in the Banff area.
The falls are spectacular to see this time of year. Enjoy beautiful blue & vibrant winter ice formations ....you'll love it....WEAR GOOD HIKING GEAR, Boots with ICE STABILIZERS....you'll need them.
It's a lovely day trip in any season.....
